How to tune cello? Do, Sol, Ree and La

The cello's strings are Do, Sol, Ree and La, tuned in quintas. Thus, they are refined with tuning, with quintas and with harmonics, with the tricks of a big instrument.

For Section 3 A medio tono8 min of reading

The cello is put up in quintas. From the thickest to the thinner string, his notes are Do, Sol, Ree and La (C2, G2, D3 and A3), an octave under the viola. First, the La, with its usual reference to La = 440 Hz, and then, in order, re, Sun and Do, will be sharpened with the microtuner, and the clamps will be sharpened only when the string's far from his note.

The process looks like that of violin but the size changes some things: serious strings take longer to settle, a cell tuning machine can have problems reading Do and the bridge, higher, leapt more easily. Here's step by step and two forms of ear tuning: by fifth and with harmonics.

To sum up

  • Cello's rods, from serious to acute: Do (C2), Sun (G2), Ree (D3) and La (A3).
  • The cello's looks at 220 Hz: it's the 440 Hz's, an octave lower.
  • Afina sitting in a position to play, starting with La and passing string by string.
  • If the tuner doesn't read the Do well, touch with arch and sound, or compare its harmonic with the Sun string.
  • Filling by pura quintas from La, Do remains about 6 cm lower than in the tuning machine and with piano, it's best to tighten the quintas a little.

The notes are the same in all sizes, from a 1 / 4 child cello to a full-size cello. The Do of the fourth string is two octaves under the central Do of the piano. as the cello reads especially in fa code, if you still have a hard time place those notes in the pentagram, it serves you how to read the fa key.

Bean and suede and suede

The logic is the same as the violin, which we explain in detail in how to tuning the violin: microtuner for small settings, clamps for big changes. In cello there are three differences that should be known:

  • The clamps are bigger and the ropes have more tension. A minimum turn moves the note a lot. Push the lever to the lever while you turn, so that it doesn't come back.
  • It's common to use several microtuning machinessometimes integrated into the cordal. At advanced violin, only one remains, at Mi and at cello, many musicians retain more.
  • The microtuning lever can touch the cover. If the screw is wrapped up to the bottom, put it up to half its path and get the note back with the stick.

To use the stick, sit with the cello in a position to play: with your left hand you reach the stick and with your right you press the pizzicate string, close to the end of the diapason. It goes a little under the note and goes up to it. Then face the bridge: with every turn of the stick, the ropes drag him to the diapason. how to care for cello We'll tell you how to check.

Step by step with tuning

  1. Just sit and play with his pica and his stable cello and a place with no noise.
  2. Loan a clamp tuner onto the bridge or open the [cello online tuner]](/herramientas/afinador/violonchelo)That works with his phone or his computer phone.
  3. Touch the La with an arch with a long and matching sound at medium volume. Rig with the microtuner: in the sense of the watch's hands the note goes up and down.
  4. If the tuner shows another note, as Sun and La)), the string's far: first use the stick.
  5. Keep with re, sol and do, in that order.
  6. Do a second passing: as a string's tension changes, the others move a little.

If the tuner doesn't read the Do: The microphones of many cellphones miscapture very serious frequencies, and the tuner can leap between notes or mark a Sun, that's a strong harmonic of that string. Touch it with arch and not pizzicate with a firm sound, get his cell phone up to the effes, or use a clamp tuner, that reads the vibration directly. Also you can tune it against the Sun string with the harmonics we explain later.

Filling by nil, with an ear

That's how we put them into an orchestra: we have to have an oboe's or piano's La and the other strings play them from a to a few. In the cello, serious nits are heard slower and more cloudy than in the violin, so we have to play with a slow bow, with a weight spread between the two and without a rush.

Listen to the beaker: a waveling of the sound, as a "Ua-Ua-Ua," that gets slower as you get closer. When it goes and the fifth sounds still, it's fair. On the Sun and Do cords the beaker costs more; if you don't hear it, come first with the tuner and use his ear to confirm.

A detail for cheelists: pura-fifths are a little more extensive than those for the piano. If you have perfect ear tunes from La, re remains about 2 cm under the tuner, the Sun about 4 and Do about 6. Playing alone or in quartet isn't a problem with piano, that Do looks, and that's why many cheelists have a little tighten up serious quines.

Filling with harmonics

A harmonic occurs by touching the string very soft with his finger, without pressuring his finger at an exact point: at half the string sounds an octave, and at one third of the string sounds an octave and a fifth. The harmonics are clear and sustained, so the milkshake is better heard than with serious strings to the air.

The point of a third is in the area of the fourth place, just where, by passing, a fifth above the string to the air would sound. On the re string, for instance, that harmonic gives an acute La that should coincide with the La string.

  • Just put his finger up, as a pen, and play with light and quick arch, a little closer to the bridge as usual.
  • The most comfortable form: put the harmonic onto the serious string and play at once the neighbor string into the air. If the eighth wave, tightens the serious string.
  • The harmonics give pure intervals, so the result is the same as tuning by hundreds of ears. With piano, the tuning remains the best reference.

What's his name?

  • New rods: Do's, the thickest, usually takes a while to stabilise.
  • Climate changes: from the dry cold of Bogota to hot ground, the wood and the seawns react. After a journey, leave the cello a while in his case before opening and tuning.
  • Retiring clamps: If a person scattering while you push her, the luthier can tighten her or treat her with stick dough.
  • Fitted microtuning machines: If they have no more path, re-place the note with the stick and do not force the screw.

With young children, at home they'll be sure to use only the microtuning and leave the clamps for class. cello, tuning is part of the first minutes of each session until you do so alone and with confidence.

Frequently asked questions

The cello claw as well as the cello?

The two have been tuned in fifth and with the same order of work, starting with La. They change the notes: the violin goes Sol, re, La, Mi and la cello Do, Sol, re, La, far more serious. The viola have the same notes as the cello, an octave above.

How soon do we have to put up with cello?

Each time you're gonna play it. A touch to the microtuning machine will usually have to do with a touch. If you have been saved or climate changed, you may have to use the clamps.

Can you put pizzicate into the cello?

Yeah, especially at first or as you turn a stick. But pizzicate on serious ropes goes out quickly and the tuner reads worse and as soon as you run the arch, put an arch with an arch for more stable reading.

What do I do if the bridge leaned to tuning?

If the bridge is leaned to the diapason, ask your teacher or a luthier to clear it or teach you how to do so. A bad move with a bridge that high can put it down with a bad move.
