Acoustic guitar lessons in Bogotá, at home and online

The acoustic guitar is an ideal companion for singing, songwriting and playing with friends: a few chords and a good strumming pattern are enough to accompany many songs. Lessons build that foundation with attention to posture and right-hand technique, then move on to picking, fingerstyle, reading or your favorite rhythms. What you'll learn in acoustic guitar lessons

  • Posture, tuning the instrument and positioning both hands.
  • Open chords, barre chords and smooth changes between them.
  • Strumming patterns for ballad, rock, bolero, bambuco and pasillo, among others.
  • Picking and arpeggios with a pick or your fingers (fingerstyle).
  • Reading chord charts, tablature and, if you'd like, sheet music.
  • Accompanying your own voice and working out songs by ear.

When can you start?

From age 6

As a guide, children usually start guitar between ages 6 and 7, on smaller guitars (1/2 or 3/4) with nylon strings, which are gentler on the fingers. Before that age, hands are often too small to form chords comfortably, though every child is different and the teacher assesses each case. Adults can start at any age; at first your fingertips get a little sore, but with steady practice that passes.

What you need to get started

  • A steel-string acoustic or classical guitar in the right size, with nylon strings if it's for a child.
  • A tuner (a tuner app works too) and a few picks.
  • A chair without arms and, if the teacher recommends one, a footstool.
  • For online lessons: a stable connection and a camera that shows both hands from the front.

Why learn acoustic guitar

  • It's portable and versatile: you can take it anywhere and it works for almost any genre.

  • Lets you accompany your own voice or other people's from early on.

  • Develops coordination between one hand that keeps the rhythm and another that shapes the chords.

  • It's a natural gateway to the electric guitar, the bass or the tiple.

Questions about acoustic guitar lessons

Will my fingers hurt when I start?

It's normal to feel some soreness in your fingertips during the first few weeks, while calluses form. Nylon strings, a well set-up guitar and short practice sessions help a lot. If the pain is intense, it's usually a sign of tension or strings that sit too high, and your teacher will help you fix it.

Acoustic or classical guitar: which is right for me?

The classical guitar uses nylon strings and a wider neck, and it's ideal for children and for classical or Latin American music. The steel-string acoustic has a brighter sound, widely used in pop, rock and folk. Either one works for starting out; your teacher will help you choose based on the music you want to play.

How long will it take me to play full songs?

It depends on your practice and the song, but with just a few open chords you can already accompany simple songs. Smooth changes and steady strumming take consistency, and practicing a little every day gets you further than one long session a week (here are some ideas for doing that). Your teacher picks songs that match your level.

Can I learn guitar in online lessons?

Yes, the guitar adapts very well to online lessons. What matters is that the camera shows both hands and that you have good lighting. Your teacher corrects your posture and fingering in real time and gives you specific tasks to practice between lessons.
