Oboe lessons in Bogotá, at home and online

The oboe is one of the orchestra's clearest voices: its penetrating tone traditionally provides the A that everyone tunes to. It uses a double reed, two blades that vibrate against each other, so it calls for a particular embouchure and careful air control. It is a less common instrument, and oboists are often welcome in youth orchestras and chamber ensembles.

What you'll learn in oboe lessons

  • Double-reed embouchure: how to shape your lips around the reed to control tone and intonation.
  • Air management: the oboe uses little air but a lot of pressure, so you learn to release leftover air before breathing in again.
  • Fingerings, octave keys and alternate positions that make fast passages easier.
  • Reed care: how to soak it, check it and tell when it's time to replace it.
  • A repertoire of études, Baroque pieces and some of the instrument's best-known orchestral solos.
  • The oboe's role in the orchestra, the concert band and the wind quintet.

When can you start?

From age 10

As a rough guide, children usually start the oboe around age 10 or older, often after some time on another wind instrument. The double reed demands a lot of lip control and air pressure, and the hands need to reach the keys precisely. Every child is different: if they're very motivated, the teacher may consider starting earlier. Adults can start at any age; to dig deeper, read what age to start learning music.

What you need to get started

  • An oboe in good condition; since it's a delicate instrument, it's a good idea to have your teacher check it before you get it.
  • Several ready-made double reeds and a small container of water to soak them before playing.
  • A reed case, a swab to dry the inside and a tuner.
  • For online lessons: a stable connection and a camera that shows your embouchure up close.

Why learn oboe

  • You develop very fine control of your lips and air, which shows directly in the quality of your sound.

  • Trains your ear for intonation, because the oboe responds to the tiniest changes in embouchure.

  • Since it's less common, there's usually room for oboists in youth orchestras, concert bands and chamber groups.

  • Brings you closer to a beautiful repertoire: Baroque concertos, chamber music and great symphonic solos.

Questions about oboe lessons

Is the oboe very hard to learn?

It has a reputation for being demanding, especially at first: getting a steady sound from the double reed takes time and patience. With well-guided foundations, those difficulties get solved step by step. That's why it's worth having a teacher who corrects your embouchure from day one and keeps bad habits from setting in.

Do I have to make my own reeds?

Not when you're starting out. Beginners use ready-made reeds, and the teacher helps you pick one that responds well. Over time, many oboists learn to scrape and adjust their reeds to suit their sound, but that's an intermediate or advanced step.

Is it a good idea to play another instrument before the oboe?

It isn't required, but it helps. Having played recorder, flute or clarinet gives you a foundation in breathing, reading and fingering that makes the first few months easier. If you already know you want to play oboe, you can start with it directly.

Can oboe lessons be online?

Yes, they work very well for repertoire, reading and keeping track of your sound, as long as the camera is close to your embouchure and the audio is clear. For the first embouchure adjustments, some people prefer to start with lessons at home in Bogotá and nearby areas. We help you decide in at-home or online lessons.
