Electric bass lessons in Bogotá, at home and online

The bass bridges rhythm and harmony: it locks in with the drums to create the groove and supports the chords behind the whole band. Learning bass means listening to others and playing what the music needs with a steady beat. Lessons develop both hands' technique, bass-line construction and styles such as rock, funk, pop, salsa and cumbia, at home in Bogotá and the surrounding area or online.

  • Left-hand fingering and string muting for a clean sound.
  • Building bass lines from the chords: roots, arpeggios and passing notes.
  • Rhythm and groove, playing with a metronome and drum tracks.
  • Reading bass clef, chord symbols and tablature.
  • Styles such as rock, funk, pop, reggae, salsa and cumbia, including the Latin tumbao.

When can you start?

From age 9

As a rough guide, children usually start electric bass around age 9 or 10, because its long neck and thick strings call for bigger hands and some strength. Short-scale basses let younger students play comfortably, and before that age guitar or percussion are good ways to develop the ear and a sense of rhythm; it depends on each child. Adults can start at any age, and the bass is a great instrument for getting into playing with a group.

What you need to get started

  • An electric bass (short-scale if you have small hands) and a cable.
  • A bass practice amp or an audio interface with headphones.
  • A tuner and a strap so you can play standing up.
  • For online lessons: a stable connection, a camera that shows both hands and, if possible, an audio interface to send the bass sound through clearly.

Why learn electric bass

  • Develops a rock-solid sense of rhythm and the ability to listen to the whole band.

  • Teaches you harmony in a hands-on way, since every line grows out of the chords.

  • Opens up lots of chances to play in a group, since almost every ensemble needs a bassist.

  • Lets you express yourself with just a few notes: when the groove is locked in, less is more.

Questions about electric bass lessons

Do I need to know guitar to learn bass?

No. The bass has its own technique and role, and you can start from scratch. If you already play guitar, you'll have a head start finding notes on the neck, but the right hand, the rhythmic role and the way you think about lines all have to be learned fresh.

Four-string or five-string bass to start?

To start, the usual choice is a four-string bass: it's easier to handle and covers most of the repertoire. A five-string adds low notes that are useful in certain styles, and you can move up to one later if you need it. Check with your teacher before buying.

When will I be able to play in a band?

It depends on your practice and the repertoire, but the bass lets you contribute early on with simple lines and a steady pulse. The teacher works with backing tracks so you get used to playing with others. There's no set timeline: everyone's path is different.

Can you learn bass in online lessons?

Yes. Ideally you send the bass signal through an audio interface, because computer and phone microphones tend to pick up low frequencies poorly. With the camera showing both hands, the teacher can correct your technique and fingering in real time.
