How long does it take to learn clarinet?

The clarinet sounds fast but crossing the famous break and reading with loose band takes its time. These are the stages and the guiding times.

For Section 3 A medio tono7 min of reading

With a weekly class and about 20 to 30 minutes of practice every day, the clarinet usually sounds from first few weeksand 2 to 4 months most play melodies in serious registration. To fluently cross the registration step, the famous "break," 6 to 12 monthsand read with flares in a band with intermediate repertoire usually takes from 2 to 4 years.

They are guiding times: they depend on your constancy, the cane you use and the instrument's cover up well. The good news is that the clarinet gives early audible results, and that motivates a lot in the first few months.

To sum up

  • The first sound at the clarinet usually arrives in the first or second week and the melodies at the grave record, with an orienting form, between 2 and 4 months.
  • The break, the passage between the throat notes and the clare record, is the great challenge of the first year: it requires cover up all holes at once.
  • The clarinet does not leap to the octave but to the duodecim, so the digitations of the acute record are different from those of the grave.
  • Many screams come from the cane, from getting too much nozzle or from a bad hole, and not from a lack of talent.
  • Playing as a band accelerates reading and tuning and is usually possible between first and second year.

Clarinet Stages and Orientation Times

Orientation times with weekly class and 20 to 30 minutes of practice most of the day
EtapaWhat do you get?Orientation time with regular practice
First soundA basic embocture and serious record notes without squeezing.1 to 3 weeks
Serious registrationSimple methods melodies, throat notes and basic reading in sunlight code.2 to 4 months
Cross the breakTo move from his throat notes to his larzo log with a ligation, with no shackles and cuts.6 to 12 months
Clare and bandThat's good sound in the claren record, with changes and initial level band parts.1 to 2 years
IntermedioOveracute registration with control, agile staccato, studies and medium level works.2 to 4 years
AvanzadoSoloist Repertoire, Expand Camera Music and Audio Preparation.5 or more years of serious study

The order matters more than the velocity. Whoever passes to the clare register without a firm embocture at the grave usually goes back, because sound problems are multiplied up.

First sound: purple and cane

The sound of the clarinet was born from the cane vibrating with a nozzle. The lower lip slightly covers the teeth from the bottom, the teeth from above lean onto the nozzle and the curfew hold up everything as a string. The chin remains flat, without wrinkling.

What's with the clarinet?

  • You put too much nozzle in your mouth or too little.
  • Kill the cane rather than hold it with the curfew.
  • A finger does not completely cover his hole and an open border is sufficient.
  • The cane's scattering, crooked or too soft or too hard for you.

To start with, many teachers recommend soft or medium and have several rods in rotation. We explain how to save them and care for the nozzle at how to clear and care for a clarinet.

The Break: The big step of the first year

By pressing the registration key with his left thumb, the clarinet does not put up an octave as the flute or saxophone but rather a duodecimThat's why the scans from the clear register are different from those from the grave, and reading feels as how to learn a second map.

The breakage is the step between the notes of the throat (Sun, The and If bemol, that are touched with almost everything open) and the Natural If of the clare register, that requires cover up all holes, use a pinique and hold the registration key at the same time. Any small leak produces a shilling. These are the most helpful exercises:

  1. Keep your fingers right down while you touch your throat notes, as your teacher tells you: so the change to the Natural If is far lower.
  2. Duodecime-related practice: play a serious note, add the record key without moving his fingers and listen how to get up.
  3. It goes down from the clear register to his throat and for many students that's easier to feel at first.
  4. Do it slow with [methonomic]](/herramientas/metronomo)and only his tempo goes up as soon as his change goes clear several times in a row.

Reading and the clarinet itself bemol

The clarinet is read only as a code of sun, and that makes things easier. What's confusing at first is that the most common clarinet is in itself bemol: when you read a Do, a bemol Do sounds. In the band you have nothing to do, because the parts have been written for your instrument and only counts when you play with piano or with scores from other instruments.

Reading is a great part of the time of learning. At the band, clarinet often have quick passages and many notes, so reading at first glance with fluency becomes as important as sound. Ten minutes a day of simple reading, under your level, make a real difference in a few months.

The clarinet has a protagonic place in Colombian gangs, from the pits and fringes of the savanna to the corridors of the Andean gangs. If your goal is to play at one, tell them to your teacher from the beginning so that reading and group work will come into the plan.

What's accelerating and how's stopping your advance

  • Expand: good and tiresome rods, long notes at the start of every practice, short sessions about every day and soon play with other musicians.
  • Expand: a revised instrument. A loose cork or a slipper that doesn't seal makes the break seem impossible.
  • Braking: To get up with cane hardness soon believing that that's how it sounds better.
  • Braking: biting the nozzle, because it closes the step of the cane and the sound becomes small and out of tune.
  • Braking: practice only what's already come out and avoid registration passing.

Many children start at age 8 or 9, while they have their final teeth up ahead and adults can start at any age. clarinet classes The teacher checks pursuit, cane and instrument from first session, that's where more time is earned.

Frequently asked questions

Is it hard to learn clarinet?

The first sound is relatively accessible, more than with the traverse flute. The difficulty appears with registration and with quick band reading. Regular practice and good guide have been an instrument that has been most appreciated since the first few months.

What tightness of cane should we start with?

It usually starts with soft or medium tightness rods, and gets up from time to time as the pursuit strengthens. The ideal tightness also depends on the nozzle, so best that your teacher lays his suit listening to your sound.

If I play clarinet, can I get to the saxophone later?

That's a regular step. You'll have reading, breathing and work with a cane. The saxophone's embocatment is more loose and the digitations of an acute record change, because the saxophone goes up to an octave. Even so, the transition's usually fast.

Reg or wood clarinet to learn?

To start with, most students use resin claratorias: they are more resilient to climate changes and blows. If you doubt between models, check our guide to [choose your first claratorio]](/blog/como-elegir-tu-primer-clarinete).
