Section of teacher's appraisal for music teachers: how to observe classes
A four-tiered example rubric, the process to observe classes from your current computer and how to convert what you have been watching into feedback and a development plan.
A teacher's assessment centre for music teachers defines few observable criteria (planning, musical domain, pedagogical clarity, class climate, feedback and monitoring progress) and describes what looks at every level of performance. It's applied to an observed real class, converts with teacher and ends up with a development plan with one or two priorities.
Unlike the section of a sample class, that serves to choose from among candidates, this is used with your current equipment: its goal is to improve teaching, to avoid passing or to reprove. Here's an example section, the observation process and how to give feedback that really serves.
To sum up
- He evaluates what can be seen in a class: planning, musical domain, clarity, climate, feedback and monitoring.
- He shares his rubric with his team before his observation and his surprising observations give rise to mistrust and display classes.
- He lays down concrete evidence with each level: what was seen and heard, not impressions.
- The later conversation weighs more than the score: it begins with reflection of his teacher and ends with one or two goals.
- Adjust the Section to the format: individual class, group, ensemble, early childhood or virtual class.
What's a Section for Teacher Evaluation for?
A shared rudder creates a common language about what a good class of music is at your institution. It allows evidence-based conversations, shows what each teacher needs and what the whole area needs, and lets you compare actual performance with what his selection promised. Well used, moreover, helps to retain teachers from your academy: A teacher who receives accompaniment feels his work matters.
| Aspecto | Sample class (selection) | Teacher's assessment (equipment) |
|---|---|---|
| Objective | Choose from candidates | To develop to every teacher and area |
| Clase | A cut with real or simulated students | A real, complete class or a representative block |
| Own criteria | Response to the slogan and potential | Period planning, monitoring of progress and family relations |
| Resultado | A score to decide | Retirement and development plan |
If you are looking for a version for candidates, it's in class shows how to evaluate a music teacher.
Section of model with four levels
The Section has seven criteria and four levels. Use them as a basis and adapt their language to your institution. The important thing is that each level describes something that can be seen or heard.
| Criterio | 1. Initial | 2. In development | 3 · Competent | 4. Highlights |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Planning | A target isn't shown and class's makeshift. | There's an aim but activity doesn't support them. | Clear goal, activity in sequence and relation to the period's plan. | The class takes back the above, prepares the following and the student knows the goal. |
| Music and model domain | Proof with pulse, tuning or sound errors. | A good model but with little or little expression. | A clear and musical model, adjusted to class level. | Use the model with intention: contrasts versions, sings, accompanies. |
| Clarity and strategies | Long or confusing explanations. | He's clear but his only way. | Divide into steps and combine demonstration, ear and simple language. | He changes his strategy as an answer and leads his student to discover. |
| Class climate | Tension, misinterest or unrespectful treatment. | That's a good deal, an irregular connection. | A friendly and secure climate and a student dares to be wrong. | The student proposes, asks and enjoys, and we note confidence. |
| Retrofeeding to the student | Absence or disqualification. | Generic: "well," "again." | Special, one or two things at a time. | Special and timely and teach the student to self-evaluate. |
| Monitoring progress | No registration or homework for the week. | Fingerboard and irregular registration. | A clear target and an advance record. | Use the register to tiup planning and talk with family. |
| Group management (if applicable) | He's lost his attention and chaotic transitions. | Order at times and many dead times. | Clear tights and agile transitions. | They all participate and the incidents are solved without stopping class. |
How to use it without distorting it
- Evidence with each level: A concrete sentence will suffice, for example: "3 students have been waiting without touching throughout the explanation."
- "Unobserved" is a valid response: If there was no opportunity to see a criterion in that class, do not force it.
- Look at the profile, and not just the mean: A 4 in climate and a 2 in planning say more than a 3 general.
How to make observation: before, during and after
Antes
Reforms to the date with the teacher and have a short conversation: what's the goal of that class, how's the group or the student and if there's anything that I want to get a special look at. Share the rubric with advance. If you're going to record, get the necessary authorizations, including that of families with children.
Durante
Replace where you don't stop and do not interplay with class. Take notes with the time and textual phrases: what the teacher said, what the students did, how long each activity took. Also, watch the students, and not just the teacher: their answer is best evidence of what works. Keep the complete class or at least a long and representative block.
Later
Complete your autograph with the evidence at hand before the conversation. Agenda feedback a few days later, as you both remember class well.
How to give feedback that serves
- He starts by asking: how did you feel about class? What did come out as you thought and what didn't?
- Name fortresses with evidence: "When the group scattered, you moved to body percussion and in a minute they were all with you."
- Choose one or two priorities, No ten. A teacher with a clear goal goes forward and a teacher with a long list goes up.
- Sample the evidence of each priority and she asks how the teacher sees her before proposing.
- They agree with concrete actions: To look at a colleague, to try a strategy, to record a class and to check it out together.
- Set the date of following observation To close the cycle.
How to adapt the heading to class format
| Format | What's more heavy | What to add |
|---|---|---|
| Individual class | Level adaptation, feedback and monitoring | The instrument's own posture and technique |
| School group class | Group management, clear instructions and participation | care for students with different levels |
| Retiring: band, choir or orchestra | Music domain, direction and efficient essay | Overall and Section Work Filling |
| Initiation and early childhood | Climate, play, move and activity changes | Ratings and transition songs |
| Virtual class | Clarity, audio and camera use | Preparation of space and recorded tasks |
From score to development plan
Each observation should end with a short and written plan. For instance, for a high school teacher with difficulties with transitions:
- Target: instructions to a group less than a minute with a clear start sign.
- Action: To observe a good-routed colleague's class, write his instructions before his class and record a session to review them.
- Support from the institution: A conversation with co-ordinating to check the video.
- Review: a new observation in a few weeks focused on that criterion.
When you put together the observations of the whole team, the area's map appears: if several teachers are at 2 monitoring progress, the problem isn't individual and the solution is a common training. Before extending the rubric, it qualifies: two observers have the same class and they have been shown and they have been compared until their levels coincide.

Frequently asked questions
How much do we have to watch every teacher?
At least once per academic period with a monitoring observation at the time a plan was agreed. The new teachers have to be observed at their first few weeks and again about three months.
Who's to watch class?
Someone with a pedagogical and musical criterion: co-ordination, a leading teacher of the area or an outside observer. To technical aspects of the instrument, it greatly helps that observer to know that family of instruments.
Is it better to watch live or by video?
The two options serve. A better understanding of the living room's climate and the video allows us to review details and to have an observation and have his or her teacher see his or her own. If you record his or her name, his or her families have been authorized to have his or her own family and if there are children.
Do we have to share his scores with his teacher?
That's right, and with the evidence that's back them up and with a conversation, and not by mail. What's wrong with them is to publish comparisons between teachers: the goal is that each person goes forward, and doesn't create a ranking.
