How to tuning with this tuner
- Touch Engage Mic and accept the browser's permission.
- Touch a single string or note at once, close to the microphone and at a place with no noise.
- Look at the needle: to the left you are low (up tuning), to the right you are high (down).
- When the needle remains in the central green area, the note is tuned.
- If you play a string instrument, open his tuning machine: there you see every string with his note, you can set the string that you're tuning and listen to the reference note.
What about the note and the needle and the cens?
Below you see the name of the note in Spanish and an American encryption with its octave: for example, "The A4" is the 440 Hz note, which is used as a reference for tuning. The needle measures the distance to that note in cens. A semitono, the distance between two local guitar or two neighbouring piano keys, is divided into 100 cens.
If the needle sets − 20, you are 20 cm below: up the tuning little by little. Between − 5 and + 5 cm the note is considered tuned to practice. When two instruments sound together, even small differences are heard as a waveling in the sound and so it's best to tuning calmly before playing as a group.
Frequency of musical notes (La = 440 Hz)
Each note corresponds to a frequency, as measured by hertz (vibrations per second). When an octave up, the frequency doubles: the La4 vibrates at 440 Hz, the La3 at 220 Hz and the La5 at 880 Hz. That table covers the registration of most string and voice instruments.
| Note | Eighth 2 | Eighth 3 | Eighth 4 | Eighth 5 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Do (C) | 65.41 Hz | 130.81 Hz | 261.63 Hz | 523.25 Hz |
| Do♯ (C♯) | 69.30 Hz | 138.59 Hz | 277.18 Hz | 554.37 Hz |
| Re (D) | 73.42 Hz | 146.83 Hz | 293.66 Hz | 587.33 Hz |
| Re♯ (D♯) | 77.78 Hz | 155.56 Hz | 311.13 Hz | 622.25 Hz |
| Mi (E) | 82.41 Hz | 164.81 Hz | 329.63 Hz | 659.26 Hz |
| Fa (F) | 87.31 Hz | 174.61 Hz | 349.23 Hz | 698.46 Hz |
| Fa♯ (F♯) | 92.50 Hz | 185.00 Hz | 369.99 Hz | 739.99 Hz |
| Sol (G) | 98,00 Hz | 196.00 Hz | 392.00 Hz | 783.99 Hz |
| Sol♯ (G♯) | 103.83 Hz | 207.65 Hz | 415.30 Hz | 830.61 Hz |
| La (A) | 110.00 Hz | 220,00 Hz | 440.00 Hz | 880.00 Hz |
| La♯ (A♯) | 116.54 Hz | 233.08 Hz | 466.16 Hz | 932.33 Hz |
| Si (B) | 123.47 Hz | 246.94 Hz | 493.88 Hz | 987.77 Hz |
To reference: The 6th string of the guitar is a Mi2 (82.41 Hz), the central Do of the piano is the Do4 (261.63 Hz) and the most acute string of the violin is a Mi5 (659.26 Hz).
The = 440, 442 or 432 Hz?
The international ISO 16 standard sets the La4 at 440 Hz, and that's the reference for this tuning. Some orchestras and groups have a somewhat higher tuning at 441 or 442 Hz. If you play with them, change the "The =" selector and all the notes are adjusted. Also, you will see 432 Hz: it's not a standard, so use it only if your group or a recording require it. The important thing is that all those that play together use the same reference.
Tips for a stable tuning
- It's fine at the same place you're gonna play: the temperature changes tuning.
- Afina up to the note, if you pass, come down a little and get back up.
- Retiring all the ropes at the end: the tension of some moves to each other.
- To his voice, he sings an open vocal and holds his note without vibration.
Common challenges
- The note leapes or appears an octave above: He plays softer and let the sound stabilise. In serious strings, his mic sometimes gets more harmonic than his fundamental note.
- Do not react: Check the bug's permission in the browser and have no other apps using it. With hearing aids with a microphone, the browser may be listening to hearing aids.
- There's a lot of noise: He looks for a quiet place and approaches his cell phone to his instrument, and his tuner ignores his weak sounds.
Filling his voice
The tuner also serves as a tuner: He sings a long note with an open vocal and looks at if his needle remains at the centre. If you want to know what notes are comfortable with you, do the Voice type test.
Frequently asked questions
How does a chromatic tuner work?
Listen to the sound by the microphone, compute its frequency and show you the nearest note of the 12 notes of the chromatic scale, along with how many cens you are above or under.
What does it mean to be at + 10 cents?
A cent is the hundredth part of a semitone. + 10 cm means that the note's a little high: you have to lower the tuning. Between − 5 and + 5 cm are considered tuned for practice.
Why are there tuning with La = 442 Hz?
The power station will be set at 440 Hz as a standard but some orchestras and groups use 441 or 442 Hz for a more brilliant sound.
Do we record your audio?
No. The analysis occurs on your own device and the sound isn't recorded and sent to any server.
Do you have a tiple, a bandola or a four?
That's right. That's an infiner that recognizes any note and you have infinators with the exact notes from [tiple]](/herramientas/afinador/tiple)The [Andean bandola]](/herramientas/afinador/bandola-andina) and the [four tires]](/herramientas/afinador/cuatro-llanero)with an octave string.
Does that work on his cell phone?
Yeah, with Chrome, Safari and Firefox up-to-date, both on Android and iPhone. Just accept the bug's permission first time.
