How do I get you ready for the music admissions test?
The music tests combine theory, listening, reading and instrument, and each university weighs them differently. That guide gives you the complete map and a 6 to 12 months plan.
To prepare for a music admittance test is to train five things at once: theory, ear (dictation), rhythmic and atoning reading, your instrument and the ability to do everything under pressure. If you have already been and read with flares, 6 months of tidy work are a reasonable term and if you are starting with theory or ear, think about a year or more.
The first thing isn't to study: it's to choose what programs you're going to propose to. Each university will conduct its different test and publish its requirements at every call. That guide gives you the general map and leads you to the guides of every university.
To sum up
- Almost all tests combine musical aptitude, theory, dictated, reading and listening in your instrument, some add up interview and knowledge 11.
- Each university weighs different components, and these weights can shift from call to call: always read the current instructiva.
- On an earlier basis, it plans at least 6 months of production and if you start from scratch, a year or more.
- The dictima and the inked reading are what takes them most to mature: train them daily, in short sessions.
- Do simulations with time and with someone to evaluate you: exam pressure also trains.
What do the music admissions tests evaluate?
Although every university will conduct its own exam, most of them evaluate the same families of skills. What changes is order, level of demand and how much each party weighs.
| Componente | What they ask of you | Examples of revised call (2026) |
|---|---|---|
| General requirements | Bachelor's degree and exam Know 11 | His weight varied greatly: his Pedagogic was a requirement but his figure was clear and his ASAB weighed 5% and required a minimum global score and his name was an unprecedented reference. |
| Music skills | Repeat rhythms and melodies, recognize intervals, musical memory | The Fancy Test of The Andes and the ASAB's Retirement Hearing Test |
| Theory and grammar | Thonalities, armores, intervals, scales, triades and chords of seventh, high levels, harmonic and counterpoint analysis | harmonic analysis at national level and harmony and counterpoint to two voices at ASAB |
| Dictado | Write rhythms, melodies, intervals, chords and progrestions that you listen to | Melodic and harmonic dictation at national level and five types of dictation at ASAB |
| Lectura | Rhythmic and melodic reading atoning, often at first glance | Oral reading at first glance before the national jury, without your instrument |
| Instrument or voice | Free work or work imposed, studies, scales, first-glance reading | Eliminatory at national and ASAB, free work, work imposed and reading at Pedagogic |
| Entrevista | Motivation, musical trajectory and, at his degree, educational provision | He weighed 40% at his Bachelor's degree and was at El Bosque on the same day as his tests. |
Check out the word. phase out. In several programs, if you do not achieve the minimum in instrument or listening, the rest of the exam doesn't count. That's why a loose instrument with a lot of theory and the other way around.
There are important nuances if you have learned independently. The Andes explain that their examination of musical aptitude isn't an examination of knowledge, and at Javeriana the emphasis on Musical Education requested a free work of any gender. Still, at Javeriana they have been admitted to have a classification examination and they may require a levelling: the theory will reach you sooner or later.
First, choose what programs you're going to introduce yourself to
To prepare for "the music test" in general is inefficient. It's not the same an exam that evaluates harmonic and counterpoint analysis as an aptitude of about 20 minutes. Define two or three programs and read their instructists before setting up your plan.
| Universidad | What weighs most or defines the test | Detailed guide |
|---|---|---|
| National (Conservatory) | General admission examination more specific test and instrument disposal and first reading | National entrance examination |
| District (ASAB School of Arts) | Two clear tests (hearing and instrumental) and then emphasis, dictated and read, harmony and counterpoint, lectowriting and Know 11 | Admission to Music Arts at ASAB |
| National pedagogical | Attitude and musical knowledge, interview and main instrument | Admission to Bachelor of Music |
| Javeriana | Interview and listening as emphasized: portfolio in Composition, conduct an ensemble in Direction | Admission to Music Studies |
| The Andes | Mandatory musical aptitude examination of about 20 minutes and instrument listening after admission | [Admittance to Music in Los Andes]](/blog/admision-musica-universidad-de-los-andes) |
| The Forest | Ability, theoretical and auditory evidence at computer, instrument and interview on the same day | Admission to Music Training |

Questions to answer before you start studying
- What title do you want and with what emphasis: interpretation, composition, direction, pedagogy, jazz and production?
- Do you have an instrument that's offered with that program?
- When did she open registration? At the revised call, ASAB and El Bosque admitted every semester and Univalle once a year.
- What parts are disposal and how much does each weigh?
- At national level, for example, the oral part was put before a jury in Bogotá, something key if you live in another town.
- Do they publish an established repertoire, studies or work? How far ahead?
Preparation plan 6 to 12 months
That plan means that you have already been playing your instrument with some leaking. If you haven't read music yet, add up a few months at first to learn how to read scores before we get into this table.
| Etapa | Theory | Hearing and Dairy | Lectura | Instrumento |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Months 1 to 3: base | Intervales, highand lower scales, armores, triades | Singing intervales, single rhythmic dictation, short melodies by common degree | Rhythmic reading at 2 / 4, 3 / 4 and 4 / 4 and with a high and lower level of solphis | Choose Repertoire, daily technical routine, scales |
| Months 4 to 6: construction | Retiring with seventh, circle of nines, cadences, harmonic functions | Melodies with leaping, chord dictated, harmonic intervals | Compounds, synpates and tones with more alterations | Riding works by sections, first complete recording |
| Months 7 to 9: level of review | harmonic analysis and conduct of voices and counterpoint if your programs require | harmonic issue of progressions, longer dictated | First-day reading with new material | Stopo works, technical studies, first simulated auditions |
| months 10 to 12: simulations | Review of weak points, exercise with time | Timetries given under examination | Reading to another person as a jury | Full program with public information and fine adjustments, and no great changes |
If you have 6 months, put together the first two stages in months 1 to 3 and reserve at least the last four to 6 weeks for simulations. If your university published a work put up soon before the test (at the Pedagogic was published about a month earlier, as revised), leave space for them to ride.
How does a typical week look
- Each day: 20 to 30 minutes of listening and reading, in short blocks. Rains far more than a long session on Saturday.
- Five or six days: instrument with technique, studies and works.
- Two or three times a week: written theory (exercises, analysis, harmony).
- Once a week: To record you by playing the program and to review corrected dictations.
- A weekly class with teacher, or more in the last few months, to correct what you don't see alone.
The five skills you have to train
1. Grammar and theory
That's the basis of everything else: if you don't recognize an armor or a chord on paper, you will also have to write them into a dictation. Domine [bigger and minor scales]](/blog/escalas-mayores-y-menores-explicadas)If your programs evaluate harmony (ASAB requested common practice and counterpoint to two voices per species), you need someone to correct your exercises: these mistakes are barely seen alone.
2. Hearing and dictation
That's what takes most time and doesn't solve itself by studying the previous night. He works every day intervals, rhythms, melodies and chords, and get used to first write his rhythm and then his notes. We explain it step by step in [how to prepare his musical dictation].](/blog/dictado-musical-como-prepararlo).
3. Rhythmic and melodic reading
They can ask you to read a rhythm, play a melody or read at first glance in front of a jury. At national level, for instance, reading of the oral part was not done in your instrument. It trains stable pulse, atoning by degrees of scale and custom to avoid stopping. You have technique and exercises in [rhythmic and melodic reading for the entrance test]](/blog/lectura-ritmica-y-melodica-para-la-prueba-de-admision).
4. Your instrument or your voice
In many programs it's the most heavy and can be eliminated part. It's not about playing the most difficult thing: the jury hears sound, tuning, rhythm, technical monitoring and musicality. He chooses works that play with safety and prepares scales and studies. We help you choose [Repertoire for admittance audition]](/blog/repertorio-para-la-audicion-de-admision).
5. Additional Piano
Even if your instrument is another, a piano or basic keyboard changes your preparation: let you listen to the chords you write, check your dictations, play the reference note before you have to write and understand harmony with your hands. Also, a complementary piano is a regular matter in music racing and preparatory as that of The Forest that includes keyboard. No Pianist level: simply with scales, triades, simple progressions and melodies at one hand. If parts of zero, some [piano classes]](/clases/piano) A few months make a big difference.
Simulacles: training of pressure as well
To know something in your room isn't the same as with a watch and with a jury looking at you. The simulations show you where you miss under pressure and get used to the format, so that the day of the test will be nothing new.
- Do an exam written with your program's format: theory, analysis and dictated, with as long as they will give you.
- If you play the dictation yourself, your head already knows the answer.
- Read at first glance material that you have never seen, in front of someone, without repeating.
- Play your complete run program with no pauses and no heat half an hour earlier as can be performed at audition.
- If there's an interview, practice it out loud: why do you want to study music, what have you been doing and what you have been expecting from the race. We work at [the music entrance interview]](/blog/entrevista-de-admision-en-musica).
- Reforms, scores repeated errors and adjustes the plan for the following weeks.
Do a first drill about half the plan, to measure where you are, and at least one every two weeks in the last month and a half. The ideal thing is to make a jury an experienced person preparing seekers, knowing what they are requested and at what level.
The Day of Test
What to wear
- A document and what the summons require. Read it twice with time and place of each test.
- Your revised instrument with spare parts: ropes, rods, resin, baquetes. The revised Univalle call put his own instrument with the exception of piano, contraple and percussion.
- Your scores and copies if the instructive wants to give them to the jury.
- Pencil, paper and tapestry for the written part.
- Water and something to eat: some days are long.
During the test
- He arrives early and warmens with calm: slow scales and long notes, and his work doesn't complete ten times.
- If the test's early in Bogota, the cold cheens your hands: keep them hot till they play.
- In the dictation, first write about safety (compass, rhythm, support notes) and complete with the following auditions.
- At reading, check for armor and bars and rough passages before you start and don't stop if you're wrong.
- If the jury intersects with you or asks you for another section of the play, it's normal: often listen to fragments.
The nerves are going to be there, and the idea is that they don't decide for you. how to overcome stage fear.
Who to get ready with?
You have three roads and many proponents have them together:
- University preparations. The National, ASAB, Javeriana, El Bosque, Antioquia, EAFIT and others have extension programs. No one assures the quota: Javeriana, for example, clarifies that the race only goes through an official examination.
- Private academies with group preschoolers.
- Special classes with a custom-made plan of the programs to which you come.
We compare the options at what's a music preschoolerIn. Frequently asked questions
Can I come and study music if I can't read scores?
Most programs are very difficult, because the test includes theory, dictated and reading. The most clear exception among revised programs is The Andes, whose aptitude examination isn't knowledge. Still, learning how to read before presenting you will open up many more options.
How long before I have to get ready?
If you play and read with flares, 6 months of constant work are a reasonable time. If you start hearing training or theory from scratch, computes a year or more. What takes more to mature is dictation, so start with that.
Is there a maximum age to run for a music race?
We have no age limits for revised undergraduate programs. That's where there are some jobs: the National Preparatory Programme, for instance, is intended for young people about 15 to 21.
What if I don't pass the admittance test?
You can re-run at a later call. Check where you lost points, set up and take advantage of extra time. Some programs open up inscriptions every semester, so the wait can be short.
How much does Knowledge 11 weigh in music racing?
It depends on the program. At the revised call, the Pedagogics required it without pondering it, ASAB gave it 5% and requested a minimum global score and Los Andes used it as a reference. It confirms the data currently available at each university's instructiva.
